Overlay Cabinets
gaps vary between elements
Flush Inset Cabinets
The “reveal” around doors and drawer fronts are much tighter with flush inset cabinets. In the 1920’s & 1930’s they sometimes did a blend of overlay and flush. The drawer faces would project forward but the doors would still be flush with the cabinet.

The gap around a cabinet door or drawer face is called the “reveal”.
The primary difference between Flush Inset Cabinets and Overlay Cabinets is how big this “reveal” is
and where the face of cabinet door lives relative to adjacent cabinet faces.
The front face of all the elements are in plane with each other.
This makes them easier to keep clean.
